Patient Care
The Division of Cardiology provides inpatient and outpatient care at Upstate University Hospital, several clinics and the VA Medical Center in Syracuse. Inpatient services include:
- Management of patients assigned to inpatient wards
- Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Telemetry units
- Rehabilitation/functional assessment units
Upstate admits more than 700 cardiology patients each year and conducts more than 3,300 invasive and non-invasive procedures. The 409-bed hospital is equipped with the state-of-the-art Heart & Vascular Center on the sixth floor which provides a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including:
- Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation (including Stereotaxis Magnetic Navigation)
- Coronary angiography
- Angioplasty
- Endomyocardial biopsy
- Electrophysiology and hemodynamic studies
- Placement of coronary stents
Non-invasive capabilities include:
- Doppler
- Transesophageal echocardiography
- Stress echocardiography
- Ambulatory EKG monitoring
- Exercise testing
- Nuclear cardiac imaging
- Stress cardiopulmonary exercise testing
Opportunities to manage patients with cardiac problems during pregnancy as well as adult congenital heart problems and pre- and post-cardiac transplant are available in the outpatient setting.
